  • Researchers conducted a randomized controlled trial to investigate the effects of artificial sweeteners such as aspartame, saccharin, stevia, and sucralose on the human metabolism and the gut microbiome.
  • They found that these non-nutritive sweeteners can induce individual and specific changes in glycemic response via modifying the gut microbiome.
  • This challenges discovery the popular notion that sugar substitutes have no effect on the human body, and highlights the need for further clinical studies.

After eating foods that contain carbohydrates, blood glucose (blood sugar) levels rise as we digest the food. This post-meal spike in blood glucose levels is known as the glycemic response.

Non-nutritive sweeteners (NNSs), such as aspartame, saccharin, stevia, and sucralose, contain minimal or no carbohydrates and therefore were presumed by scientists not to trigger a glycemic response. This belief that NNSs

New Native-run health clinic opens in Pioneer Square

A new Native-run health clinic opened in Seattle’s Pioneer Square on Thursday afternoon, integrating traditional Indian healing practices with full medical, pharmacy, behavioral health and substance use treatment services.

The 3,000-square-foot clinic at 124 Second Ave. S., nestled near the corner of Yesler Way, adds to the options available for culturally competent health care, after years of work by the Seattle Indian Health Board, Chief Seattle Club and a number of community partners and city and state elected officials. Clinic leaders hope the space invites both Native and non-Native patients, they said Thursday.

“Our community has been so disenfranchised by administrative services for way too long,” Derrick Belgarde, executive director of Chief Seattle Club, said at the grand opening. “We know it takes a culturally responsive approach to meet the needs of our people and our community. … Native people empower to serve Native people. We know what works for

New UW deputy athletic director Marcus Sedberry said mental health was talked about often during his interviews with athletic director Chris McIntosh, who’s made it clear the topic is high on his priority list.

UW was helpful in providing information about its efforts surrounding mental health, but one lingering issue left me uncomfortable: It was impossible to write this piece without mentioning the Sarah Shulze tragedy.

Shulze, a member of the women’s cross country and track and field team, died by suicide in mid-April, a tragedy that raised the urgency inside the department to make sure athletes have
